How To Be An Activist Every Day
Speakers at the Foundation for Gender Equality Lunch
The incredible thing about activism is that you can start anytime. Many of us are already activists-without even knowing it for caring about yourself, your environment, and those that you meet and greet on a daily basis is truly the foundation of activism. When you are passionate about something in your neighborhood, for example, like making sure that your neighborhood remains without litter, you are already an activist.
(Just discovered a new cause in researching for this blog post-computer generated voice overs-ugh! Despite the computer voice, this youtube video defines activism conclusively.

7 Ways To Be A Better Activist For Causes You Believe In
Once you discover your passion (s) or concern (s), educating yourself about the problem, finding others like-minded and committed to working for the change are next steps that have worked for many. Eve Ensler describes the "activist soul" aptly:
Not even in my own neighborhood, I couldn't help but be angered and in disbelief that someone felt it acceptable to throw a can of soda and a pack of cigarettes on the ground 20 feet away from a trash and recycle receptacle at Wawa (Concord Pike, Talleyville, DE) two nights ago.
Many of our social problems result from a lack of at least one dimension of wellness. Not properly disposing of this trash demonstrates a type of carelessness and disconnect that has taken hold of many individuals and communities. Perhaps unknowingly, but no less offensively, this improperly disposed trash wasn't jut unsightly; but, it also represented breaches in physical, environmental, occupational, financial, and social wellness.
We are unable to control all of what potentially can harm us, so whatever is within our control and can prevent harm (e.g. someone walking out of the store, not seeing the soda can, falling down, twisting or fracturing an arm/leg/tooth, losing employment time-or job, requiring treatment or therapy...) why not just claim it?
Activism all day, wellness forever. Claim it.
A is for Activist is an ABC board book written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives: families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for.
