Ultra-processed or processed, it does not (nor should it) require 100s of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and post-doctoral researchers to come to the conclusion that further studies are needed to better understand the relative effect of the various dimensions of processing (nutritional composition, food additives, contact materials, and neoformed contaminants.) Seriously? People are fed up, and providers with integrity have had enough. Snatching wellness from the already marginalized with highly available "highly-processed foods/foodstuffs" readily found in the places like Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, is just another source of removing health and wellness from those who need it most.
It's FASS Food Friday at the HOUSE, and I am really concerned. Why? Because, I am certain that if you really slowed down for one minute and remembered that in order for food to be convenient, something (s) has to be added and typically it's Fat, Additives, Salt, and/or Sugar (the only marathon we're trying to win here is called the life-wellness-health race and the winners are the ones who sustain the pace, not break the tape) Rarely is any of this added stuff considered healthy. Rarely.
Yet the c-stores that eagerly and happily dispense gasoline, snacky-snack, and cigarette cocktails celebrated "innovation" two weeks ago at NACS 2017 by "holding court with new prepared-food products and innovative dispensed beverage flavors and equipment."
One of the kings in this court, Hunt Brothers Big Meaty Pizza, with its appeal to the heartier appetites of the younger, core c-store consumer, is available for a limited time (thank goodness) while supplies last. A reasonable attempt to find the nutritional "value" of the Big Meaty came up short. However this 14 second FB video will have you holding your heart to keep it from drowning in grease and fat and additives.
Hunt Brothers Pizza is an American food chain located in convenience stores, gas stations, country markets, sports arenas, and schools. It has more than 7,300 locations in 28 states as well as some international United States military bases. In fact, Hunt Brothers Pizza is quietly winning over the rural South by slipping into places big-name pizza chains probably couldn't survive. It has installed its pizza ovens at so many gas stations and convenience stores that it has more U.S. locations than either Domino's or Pizza Hut.
Probably most telling, or at least a big indicator, Hunt Brothers Pizza, website indicates that by partnering with them, profits can increase by selling the nation’s largest brand of made-to-order pizza in the c-store industry. We consistently deliver profit margins up to 50% and we charge no franchise fees whatsoever. With over 7,000 stores in 28 states, we’re always looking for more partners.
Sadly, and significantly, there isn't an indication that the pizza offers c-store consumers a healthy option nor are there any reminders that the top two chronic disease deaths in 2014 were heart disease and cancer.
Ten Foods That Cause Heart Attacks, #2→ Sausages. #6→Pizza. These 10 Foods Affect Your Risk of Heart Disease The Most. Eat less of sodium, processed meats, and red meats. And consider 17 Worst Habits for Your Heart while pondering Top 10 Cancer Causing Foods that include white flour and hydrogenated oils.
In truth, it is probably impossible to avoid every source of cancer, as carcinogens are pervasive and in much of our food, atmosphere, cosmetics, environment and a result of stress, as well. Best practice then would definitely be to avoid regular consumption of known carcinogenic food. Toss Big Meaty for some little vegetables-not laced in herbicides and pesticides, of course.
Our success is working for you...sadly, I don't believe this image from a Hunt Brother Pizza brochure is addressing their success in terms of providing healthy, nutritious food.
Rather, capitalizing on your impulsiveness and lack of making a connection between your food and your health, is their success.
We all have a right to success and to health.
Please don't be robbed of your health, however, because a business engaged in providing food values dollars higher than your health.
Slow down. You're going too fass.
